The transfer is worth more once, the card is worth more over time
This is the only real decision the Wise referral asks you to make, and it is worth thirty seconds of thought because you cannot take both.
Take the fee-free transfer if
- You have a single large conversion coming up. Wise's fee scales with the amount, so the saving is largest on a big send.
- You are moving money between countries once rather than spending abroad regularly.
- You would not otherwise order a card.
Take the free card if
- You regularly pay for things in a foreign currency — subscriptions, overseas retailers, travel.
- Your transfers are small, where the fee saved would be modest.
- You want the benefit to keep paying rather than land once.
Because the benefit is single-use and expires if unused, it is generally better to hold it for a transfer you know is coming than to spend it on a small test transaction.
The referral reduces Wise's fee, not the exchange rate
Wise prices transfers as the mid-market exchange rate plus a stated fee. The referral benefit acts on the fee line only. The rate you receive is the same with or without it, which is easy to confirm: start a transfer and watch the breakdown, where the rate stays put and the fee drops.
A few things the transfer voucher does not cover, which are worth knowing before you plan around it:
- Converting between currency balances already inside your Wise account.
- Adding money in the same currency you already hold.
- Spending on the Wise card itself.
- Amounts above the cap, where normal fees resume on the excess.
Payment-method charges can also still apply. Funding a transfer by credit card can attract a separate card fee even when Wise's own fee has been waived, so a bank transfer or debit card is usually the cheaper way to fund the transfer you use the voucher on.
Wise is a financial service and this page is not financial advice. Fees, caps and eligibility change, and none of this accounts for your circumstances — confirm the current terms in your own Wise account before planning a transfer around them.
Common questions about the Wise referral code
- What is the current Wise referral code?
- The current Wise referral code is logank43, last checked on 14 September 2026. Signing up through it gives you a choice of a free Wise debit card or a fee-free currency transfer up to A$1,000 — one or the other, not both.
- Should I take the free card or the free transfer?
- It depends on which you will actually use. The fee-free transfer is worth more in one go if you have a large conversion coming up, since Wise's fee scales with the amount sent. The card is worth more over time if you regularly spend in foreign currency, because it removes the foreign transaction fee on every purchase rather than once.
- Is the Wise referral offer for new customers only?
- Yes. It applies to accounts that have not used Wise before. Existing customers cannot apply a referral code to their own account, though they can share their own code.
- Does the fee-free transfer change the exchange rate?
- No. Wise's referral benefits reduce or waive Wise's transfer fee. The exchange rate is the mid-market rate either way and is not affected by the code. When you set up a transfer you can see this in the breakdown: the rate line stays the same and the fee line drops.
- Does the fee-free transfer cover any amount?
- It is capped — the referral covers Wise's fee up to a stated send amount, with normal fees applying above that. Wise states the current cap during sign-up, and caps change, so check the figure shown in your account rather than relying on any published number.
- Can I use the referral benefit more than once?
- No. Wise referral benefits are single-use vouchers attached to your account, and they expire if unused. If you are planning a large transfer, it is worth holding the voucher for that rather than spending it on a small test transfer.
